History

Over the years, the lake’s design evolved. The king added several features, including a small island in the center. Legend says he used this island as a royal bathing pavilion, accessible through a secret tunnel from the palace.

The British later took control of Kandy and maintained the lake’s beauty. They preserved it as a central part of the city, and it remains a key historical and cultural landmark.
