History

Kandy Lake, built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, holds a significant place in the city’s history. The king created it as part of his vision to enhance the beauty of the area surrounding the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Before the lake existed, there was a paddy field on the land. The king decided to convert it into an artificial lake, adding elegance to the city.

Construction involved some controversy, as several influential people opposed the idea. Despite this, the king pressed on, even using forced labor to complete the project. Over the years, the lake’s design evolved. The king added several features, including a small island in the center. Legend says he used this island as a royal bathing pavilion, accessible through a secret tunnel from the palace.

The British later took control of Kandy and maintained the lake’s beauty. They preserved it as a central part of the city, and it remains a key historical and cultural landmark. Today, Kandy Lake stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into its royal past while serving as a tranquil spot in bustling Kandy.
