New Rule at BIA — Visitor Access Restricted to Smoother Passenger Flow

New Rule at BIA: Visitor Access to Departure Lobby Restricted During Peak Late-Night Hours

A new operational procedure has come into effect at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA): visitors will be prohibited from entering the Departure Lobby between 10 pm and midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. This step is aimed at reducing congestion and ensuring a smoother departure experience for passengers

Why This Policy?

According to Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake, several factors—such as the delayed expansion of Terminal 2, limited check-in counters, a shortage of immigration staff, and slowed digitization efforts—have contributed to crowding issues, especially during peak late-night hours. This policy serves as an immediate relief measure.

What’s next?

BIA’s long-term improvement plan includes completing Terminal 2, redesigning lobby areas to improve space and flow, adding more ATMs and e-gates, and centralizing traveler assistance services for a seamless experience.

What travelers should know:
  • If you’re accompanying someone at the airport on Thursday to Saturday nights, avoid the 10 pm to 12 am window.
  • The restriction helps facilitate a more efficient departure process for passengers during busy times.
  • More comprehensive improvements are on the horizon—stay tuned for announcements.
