e-Gates Coming Soon to Katunayake – Border Processing Set to Get Smarter!

Katunayake Airport to Launch Automated e-Gates for Faster, Smarter Border Controls

Katunayake’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is set to modernize its immigration process with Automated Border Control (e-gates), allowing travelers to scan passports independently while ensuring document authenticity with advanced tech.

Once activated, the e-gates promise shorter queues, greater security, and a smoother transit experience. Originally, plans announced in June 2023 outlined the installation of two e-gates each at departure and arrival terminals, in collaboration with AASL and the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

These advanced systems complement existing facial recognition tools—already deployed at BIA—as part of a broader initiative to digitize and optimize immigration controls.

For travelers, this means less time in lines and easier navigation through immigration. Stay tuned as Sri Lanka continues to upgrade its aviation infrastructure in step with global standards.
