Valmiki of Ramayana fame referred to it as Lanka Pura. The Romans knew it as Taprobane. The Arabs called it Serendib, while the Portuguese named it Ceilan. The Dutch and British later called it Ceylon. Finally, the people of the country renamed it Sri Lanka. This journey of names reflects the diverse history about this enchanting island.

One of the greatest tributes to this island came from the famous adventurer, Marco Polo. His words captured the essence of this resurgent nation, honoring its beauty and significance. Throughout history, Sri Lanka has been known by many names, each reflecting its rich cultural and geographical heritage.

Quote ; “On leaving the island of Andoman and sailing one thousand miles a little South of West, the traveler reaches Ceilan which is undoubtedly the finest land of this size in the world”. – Marco Polo,

History

According to Arab Muslim legend, Adam and Eve, after being banished from paradise, crossed the land-locked continent of Gondwana via Adam’s Bridge. This bridge connected the Palk Strait. They are believed to have settled in Mannar, where a small mosque now stands, claimed to be their burial site.

Many famous travelers have visited Sri Lanka. Marco Polo arrived in 1293, Fa Hsien between 399 and 414, and Friar Odoric of Padua in 1329. The most revered visitor, however, was Lord Gautama Buddha. Even Lord Skanda, son of Shiva, left Mount Kailash to live with his beloved Valli at Vedihitikanda, near Katharagama. Notable personalities such as Thomas Lipton, James Taylor, Thomas Villiers, Walter Stanley Senior, and Arthur C. Clarke also made Sri Lanka their home. This earthly paradise continues to draw sophisticated travelers like “moths to a flame.”

Sri Lanka is steeped in myth, mystery, legend, and romance. It offers an immensely satisfying travel experience. According to paleontologist Dr. Sirhan Deraniyagala, humans have inhabited the island since around 125,000 B.C. Ancient stone edifices, like the Dolmen at Padavigampola in Rambukkana, hold great historical significance, comparable to other prehistoric structures worldwide. The recent discovery at Fahiengala caves also awaits further reports from British archaeologists.

Attractions

Sri Lanka has everything a traveler desires and more. Some say Waikiki was the world’s best beach until tourists discovered Unawatuna. Here, endless stretches of golden sands form the coastline of this paradise. For those interested in history, the cultural triangle rivals Peru’s Machu Picchu. Culture lovers can explore a land rich with centuries-old traditions in a multi-ethnic society. Panoramic views of sun-kissed mountains rising around every corner will captivate nature enthusiasts. If wildlife excites you, the national parks are full of elephants, bears, leopards, and more. Local trackers ensure every adventure is safe and unforgettable.

Food lovers will find Sri Lanka’s cuisine to be an evolving experience. Every region offers a unique blend of flavors influenced by ethnic diversity. Bold spices, red peppers, and mustard dominate the dishes, offering unforgettable culinary delights. For the health-conscious, the central highlands offer natural healing and serenity. Those seeking adventure will find numerous opportunities for walking, trekking, hiking, and even white-water rafting. After sunset, you can enjoy a peaceful night under the stars at secure campsite locations.

Sri Lanka’s many waterfalls are a sight to behold, each carrying its own ancient legend. The island’s friendly locals are always eager to help visitors explore its hidden treasures.

Accommodations

Affordable hotels, guest inns, and homestays are widely available, and transport is easily accessible by road, rail, or air. Sri Lanka has become a dream destination for travelers. Its diverse landscapes, from mountains and valleys to beaches and cloud forests, make it a truly unique place. No wonder so many foreign powers were drawn to this island in centuries past. Early Arab sailors even navigated their ships by following the scent of cinnamon carried on trade winds.

Now, with post-conflict normalcy restored, Sri Lanka is ready to welcome all kinds of travelers. Numerous travel companies operate online, providing easy access to travel information and bookings. Independent travel is also convenient, thanks to the warm and helpful Sri Lankan people. Just be wary of touts who may try to exploit tourists. Sri Lanka is home to Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, Burghers, and others who practice Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Two famous religious sites, Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) and Katharagama, attract multi-faith crowds during annual festivals.

Modern communication facilities and health services are available throughout the island, even in remote areas. Sri Lanka offers an abundance of attractions that can’t be covered in one summary. This island paradise is waiting to be explored.
